REBECCA LEER

“I am a sentimentalist. I am drawn to still lifes, figures and landscapes for their ability to express motivations beyond what is seen. My years as an illustrator have helped hone my storytelling skills. As I view my subject, I think about the many experiences I’ve had in my life and what memories are evoked. It could be the memory of a favorite place, the smell of something baking in the kitchen or the sound of someones laughter.
But without recording light effects and having a strong foundation of drawing, sentiment has no place to stand. I don’t want my paintings to be merely sentimental. The gentle flow of silvery north light elevates even the most mundane object to one of beauty.
I continue to find my artistic voice and trust that the vulnerability and emotion I show will resonate with others.”
