In the beginning of the 20th century, a new movement emerged ushering in changes to both the arts and architecture. Furniture, decorative arts and buildings were transformed by simplification, streamlining and stylization. Frames of this period were created based on the idea that there should be no distinction between form and function and were exemplified by minimal, clean lines. By unifying practicality and aesthetic appeal, modern frames were designed to recede from the art, making it appear to “come forward” toward the viewer. This in turn highlighted the art while not distracting from it. More on our framing here.
